5-Minute Quartz Stone Identification Guide

The quartz stone market is mixed with low-quality filled slabs and refurbished slabs, which are disguised as high-purity premium products. These inferior slabs have poor performance and will cause staining, yellowing, cracking, delamination and mold within 1-2 years after installation. Here are 5 simple and practical methods to identify quartz quality without professional equipment.

Observe Crystal Texture
High-quality quartz stone has transparent, uniform and naturally distributed crystal particles with three-dimensional layers and less transparent resin, presenting a premium texture. Inferior slabs have turbid, chalky and disordered particles with excessive resin covering crystals, showing dull and rough visual effect.
Water Drop Test (Zero Water Absorption)
Drop clean water on the slab surface. Water drops gather round without spreading or penetrating on premium quartz. Inferior porous slabs absorb water quickly, inevitably causing staining and mold in later use.
Hard Object Scratch Test
Gently scratch the surface with keys or coins. High-purity quartz leaves no scratches or powder falling off. Low-quality slabs will have obvious white scratches, with easy surface wear and aging after long-term use.
Soy Sauce Stain Resistance Test
Leave soy sauce on the surface for 15 minutes and wipe off with a wet cloth. Premium quartz has no residual marks and keeps clean. Inferior slabs absorb pigment and leave faint yellow-brown stains, forming permanent stubborn dirt over time.
Check Back Markings & Cutting Craftsmanship
Genuine branded quartz slabs have clear LOGO, production batch, anti-counterfeiting code and specification parameters on the back, with dense and smooth cutting sections without pores or impurities. Inferior unbranded refurbished slabs have rough backs, no marks and porous cutting sections with many impurities.
Summary
Avoid over-cheap quartz stone with turbid particles, water absorption and poor scratch resistance. Countertops are long-term hard decoration; qualified quality slabs are the best choice to avoid rework costs.
